Life at The Roost with “RED”

Chapter 1~

If you have been here for a bit or on my socials you know a little bit about us. But to get you caught up, we are family who loves hunting. Duck, deer, turkey and dove are their favorites . Well, my husband and family love the hunt, I love the pictures and creating recipes from field to table.

Our only dog breed we have had is the Black Labrador Retriever. For me they have been my companions and running partner and for Dennis and the boys a great duck hunter.

We have REMINGTON (9) and a brand new pup RED (10 wks). Remington is a GREAT duck hunter. Started his job when we were stationed in Maryland and now continuing here in Oklahoma. He is also my running partner. With the 2024 Duck Season starting he will be busy so my partner will be hard to come by.

Remington

Meet our 5th lab, RED. Our high energy, vivacious, smart, stubborn, great sense of smell, future duck hunter/running partner. In 12-18 months of course.

Training is so important and as a friend told me “ its a marathon Jenn not a sprint”. He was not kidding, I need to remind myself daily if not hourly, LOL.

Yes I put him in time out just like I did with our four kids. I use the kennel for naps and to sleep throughout the night but not for time out. We save that for his pillow or his playpen.

When training I’m all about treats. Come/here, treat, sit, treat, stay/wait treat, fetch, treat, drop, treat. You name it every command gets a treat when preformed successfully.

We are still working on potty training. I don’t use the “pee pads” that he can see. I do use them under our carpets though for protecting the floors. I tried hanging a bell off the door like I have done for our other pups but right now it is just a playing toy. I will come back to that again in about a week or two.

Play toys consists of old knotted socks, knotted hand towel, deer antlers, a ball that you put treats inside and some fall out as it rolls, nylabones, puppy size kong and a snuggle puppy. They seem to work for a little bit.

So that is RED in a nutshell, this week that is. I’m open for any puppy tips and tricks that have worked for you. Share them here or at Imperfectbalancebyjenn

Hey, I’m Jenn, semi-retired military spouse, mom of four and a NYer turned OKie. After 30 years of moving and starting from scratch, my husband, soldier, Dennis and I decided Oklahoma was our last stop. We built our forever home, “The Roost” here in SW Oklahoma.

When I’m not out running, leather working, volunteering or with the chickens, yes, a new thing for me, I’m in the garden. I love to learn and experiment how to grow here in SW Oklahoma. My favorite part is to bring the garden to the table.

I’m so glad you guys are here! We can all learn, share and “Grow” together through this journey.
