March reads/listens

There’s something about this time of year that feels like a reset. The garden starts calling, the days stretch a little longer, and life picks up a steady rhythm again. This month, between reorganizing the garden and driving back and forth with RED to see the orthopedic specialist, I leaned hard into audiobooks—and it paid off.

I listened to 18 books and managed to sit down and read one the old-fashioned way. Truth be told, audiobooks and gardening just make sense. Hands in the dirt and something worthwhile playing in my ears—it’s a simple way for me to be productive and it never gets old.

My 5 Star picks were Theo of Golden, by Allen Levi, Some Bright Nowhere, by Ann Packer , The Restoration Garden, by Sara Blaydes , The Maid, by Nita Prose , a another Fredrick Backman, The Deal of a Lifetime‍ ‍and my one book that I actually read was How to Be Lost, by Amanda Eyre Ward

I did finally finish reading Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family, by Robert Kolker I’ll be honest, I came close to putting it on the DNF list, but I’ve never been one to quit a book easily. In the end, I gave it 4 stars, but it made me earn every one of them.

My biography listen this month was Brook Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old:, Thoughts on aging as a woman. It’s an honest, thoughtful look at aging as a woman, and it struck a chord. There’s something refreshing about hearing it said plainly without all the fluff, and at this point in my life I could so relate.

This rest of my list was a mediocre 3-4 stars but still good. It could just have been the mood I was in when listening to them. LOL.

All in all, it was a full month—good books, fresh air, and a lot of miles on the road. I wouldn’t trade that kind of season for anything. There’s value in keeping your hands busy and your mind engaged at the same time.

Now I’m already looking ahead to what’s April will bring. So be sure to check back in..

Hey, I’m Jenn, semi-retired military spouse, mom of four and a NYer turned OKie. After 30 years of moving and starting from scratch, my husband, soldier, Dennis and I decided Oklahoma was our last stop. We built our forever home, “The Roost” here in SW Oklahoma.

When I’m not out running, leather working, volunteering or with the chickens, yes, a new thing for me, I’m in the garden. I love to learn and experiment how to grow here in SW Oklahoma. My favorite part is to bring the garden to the table.

I’m so glad you guys are here! We can all learn, share and “Grow” together through this journey.
