May and June in the garden~
You guys, I cannot be happier with this seasons garden thus far. We have gotten a fantastic amount of rain and sunshine. Every thing is green and full of fruit and I was able to open From Our Roost to Your Table the first week of May.
This 2025 season I have introduced ladybugs. I bought those and praying mantis. . The lady bugs are very beneficial to target aphids, mealybugs, spider mites and really any soft bodied insect. The preying mantis will, hopefully, combat those grasshoppers. Yes, they are back in full force. Unfortunately, they may take up to 12 weeks to hatch so I have written in my garden journal to order next time in March.
We also had our first pick of nectarines and peaches, beautiful dahlias that I started from seed, with hopes of tubers for next season. Corn also was able to make it before the grasshoppers destroyed them. bagged and froze kernels and full corn cobs.
The Romas and San Marzano tomatoes are so bountiful and tasty. Batches of sauce, diced and frozen, but I will be canning whole tomatoes next week.
Onions and garlic and potatoes were dug up, braided and stored. I can’t help using them daily so they may not make it for long term storage.
It has gotten so HOT in mid June but we were BLESSED to get a little rain in the beginning of the month. Cucumbers were climbing to 8’ tall and needed extra tall trellis.
Green beans were picked, blanched and frozen. They grew in the same bed with the corn and butternut squash (three sisters) I left in place to compost and planted another batch of beans where a batch of potatoes were planted.
With all that being said, May and June have truly been a blessing. July and August are around the corner and that means HEAT. Stay tuned.
Keep going, keep growing~
