July and August in the garden~

This year has been the BEST year for me. Thankful for all the early Spring rain. Cucumber are all pickled and canned and the tomatoes are slowly but surely coming to an end in this Oklahoma heat.

From Our Roost to Your Table had another successful year. I loved all the thankful notes, messages and a few tips/suggestions for next year. I promise I will grow Okra again.

But I will say, the heat has not been as bad as the past few years. The dahlias have been loving the sunshine. Just like the past few years the grasshoppers have taken a toll. I still haven’t figured out how to get rid of them. They reek such havoc by munching away.

The Three Sisters bed of corn, beans and butternut squash was another success. I saved a few squashes to hopefully have for Thanksgiving. I will do better with succession planting of beans so that we have more to add to the farm stand and freeze for us.

Once August arrived, I had also started kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts and cauliflower indoors with hopes to transplant into one bed for a Fall/cold weather garden bed.

Cold Crops started.

I grabbed what we could. Peaches, last of the tomatoes, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes. Then started to break down the beds and adding a summer cover crop to replenish what was lost in each bed.

How is your garden growing this season ?

Hey, I’m Jenn, semi-retired military spouse, mom of four and a NYer turned OKie. After 30 years of moving and starting from scratch, my husband, soldier, Dennis and I decided Oklahoma was our last stop. We built our forever home, “The Roost” here in SW Oklahoma.

When I’m not out running, leather working, volunteering or with the chickens, yes, a new thing for me, I’m in the garden. I love to learn and experiment how to grow here in SW Oklahoma. My favorite part is to bring the garden to the table.

I’m so glad you guys are here! We can all learn, share and “Grow” together through this journey.
